about

23 tracks, 1hour and 28 minutes. Corona Slayer is a collection of rhymes spoken over a serving of homegrown music. Since early March 2020 this poet donned a new overcoat belonging to Squintin Quarantino, and begun to fashion a lock-down diary. This album is a defocused adventure, a wild trip to slay the newly returned corona king covid with words and sound-dance.

This poet has been hypnotized by human beatbox languages since first hearing the Get Fresh Crew in the early 1980's. During lock-down came the chance to re-learn the art, to strengthen the essential breathing apparatus, boost the immune system and tackle isolation. The fact no electricity is required to beatbox fits snug with the D.I.Y. approach.

The songs reflect early panic, initial rage, some optimism and a dash of cypher. SQ rhymes are off-handed, ego-inflated, apocalyptic, satirical, perhaps a little childish at times, abstract, tragic and if your ears are turned up properly, funny. Recurring themes range from rage against vulture capitalists, profiteering from misery, Q-anon and disinformation warfare, science, identity, big technology, big drugs and big politics, and big reefers. Part of the trans-Neptunian objective here, orbits about the pivotal theme: unpredictability, surprise. Waterspouts.

Early SQ tracks from March 2020 were recorded at Ei-Complex Studios in Amsterdam, engineered by Senor Modulator (one half of FlyQuark). The rest are homegrown with two Vestax turntables, Jamm Pro sequencing software, Audacity and a guitar.

This album is dedicated to those who continue to extrude creativity, before, during and after Covid, and to the memory of those who have passed. I bow to warriors upholding the Hippocratic oath, healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, scientists showing sympathy and compassion for all suffering, no matter who or where.
